Welcome to Sharky Swing

At Sharky Swing, our mission is to create a fun and safe space to share our love for west coast swing. Through all the years of traveling around the country, Shanna finally wanted to create a space to bring all the Bay Area communities together. By bringing instructors from around the country, some of her favorite DJs, and snacks: the goal is to create a cozy environment for everyone to enjoy.

Why is it called Sharky Swing?

The inspiration for the name came from the phrase: "How do you say San Jose without saying San Jose?" The first image that popped into Shanna's head was Sharks (the hockey team if you aren't getting the connection). From there, the name Sharky Swing was born. Shanna also loved the idea of having a cute mascot which gave her more confidence that Sharky Swing was the correct name. From the powers of the internet she was able to hire an artist to create the Sharky designs.

The mind behind Sharky Swing: Shanna

Shanna Porcari (she/her) has been teaching dance since 2006 and starting competing in west coast swing in 2009. She has traveled all over the country, experiencing many of the different communities the states has to offer.  Currently, she competes as an all star and you can see her teaching and judging at different events. Her passion for dance and wanting to create a 'little dance home' drove her to start Sharky Swing.

Shanna loves that she can bring out instructors she has met through the years. Hoping their energy and passion for the dance will rub off on the community. She is also happy that she can bring out some of her favorite DJs that always keep her on the dance floor (and hopefully you too). Lastly, Shanna is excited that she can put her party hostess nature into application. By providing the best experience you can, from a friendly face when you walk in and lots of snacks.

One thing a great community always has is support. So Sharky Swing is excited to support some small businesses in area. One of her favorite examples is Sweet Notes Cakes. It's a small bakery run by a dancer, Betsy, in the community, and the sweets she brings is one of the highlights of the evening.

Shanna is passionate about see Sharky Swing can grow and how she can create the best experience for you.

What Dancers Are Saying

"Sharky Swing is one of my favorite dances! There's always a fantastic crowd of incredibly friendly and fun dancers! Shanna makes sure there is an impressive snack table at every dance (often featuring delicious baked good from Sweet Note Cakes)! She also brings in great DJs and teachers from the bay area (and sometimes beyond). I always add all the dates to my calendar as soon as I know to make sure I never miss one!"
